Restoration Intangible Cultural Heritage Experiential Studio is planning to host an event on Suzhou Kesi Silk Tapestry Technique at Suzhou ICH Shop Dongbei Street Branch on July 3 (Saturday).
Chinese silk tapestry, also named kesi, is an essence of Chinese traditional silk art. Since the Song (AD 960 -1279) and Yuan (AD 1271 - 1368) dynasties, Kesi silk has been one of the imperial fabrics, which is often reputed as “valuable as gold”. Kesi was listed as China’s first batch of national-level representative intangible cultural heritages in May, 2006. It was later inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Cai Xiaming, Jiangsu provincial-level senior artist and craftswoman and municipal-level representative inheritor of Suzhou Kesi Weaving Technique, won multiple gold and silver prizes in national and provincial artwork and crafts selecting campaigns. The Marilyn Monroe, a Kesi portrait artwork made by Cai, has become a piece of permanent collection of Louvre Museum in 2018.
Cai will elaborate on the history of kesi dragon robe in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1636 - 1912) and teach participants to make Kesi silver pendants and paintings.
Those who are unable to attend the event can watch it live-streamed through Douyin account @FeiyibanFeiyi and feel the charm of Suzhou Kesi online. At present, products of Suzhou Cai Xiaming Textile Co., Ltd are awaiting your choice at Suzhou ICH Shop.
